       AFRICAN-AMERICANS AND ORGAN DONATION

DSCF0499.JPG
Everyone is all smiles after another successful operation and another life is saved.

* African Americans are nearly three times more likely to have kidney faliure as European Americans.

* Two of the leading causes of kidney failure, high blood pressure and diabetes, affect African Americans at a higher rate than European Americans.

* While African Americans account for 12% of the total U.S. population, they represent 35% of the people currently waiting for a kidney transplant in our country.

* Since successful organ transplants rely partly on tissue matching, many African Americans with kidney failure can accept a transplanted kidney only from an African American organ donor.

* We must increase the number of African American organ donors so that well-matched organ transplants are available for African Americans.

* Pick up an organ donor card and brochure and talk about it with your family. If you decide to become an organ donor, sign the card, and carry it with you in your wallet or purse.

DC RAPE CRISIS CENTER: MAKING A DIFFERENCE

logo-dcrcc-small.gif

In 1972, the D.C. Rape Crisis Center (DCRCC) was legally incorporated as one of the first rape crisis centers in the nation. The Center was established by a small group of women who were motivated by sensitivity towards, and an understanding of, rape and its effect on the lives of all women.

The Center's services include: a 24-hour hotline, group and individual counseling services for rape and incest survivors and their families and friends, a companion program to accompany survivors to hospitals, courts and police proceedings, low-cost self-defense classes, a growing library, training for professionals working with survivors, and a wide array of community education programs including "Staying Safe" classes for children of all ages within the D.C. public school system.

US is Rebuked by UN for DC's lack of voting representation

The United Nations has determined that DC's lack of voting representation in Congress violates terms of an international human rights treaty agreed to by the United States government. The U.N. Human Rights Committee said it "remains concerned that residents of the District of Columbia do not enjoy full representation in Congress, a restriction which does not seem to be compatible with article 25 of the 1992 International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights."

Is Race a factor in Washington DC Speed Camera locations?

The DC government averages about 3 million dollars of revenue per month from automated traffic-enforcement cameras. AAA is beginning to recieve many complaints from Black motorists in DC about the geographic distribution of the tickets and the enforcement areas. Of the 34 speed-enforcement zones monitored by the speed cameras, 23 were in Northeast and Southeast, predominantly African-American areas of the city. John Townsend, spokesman for AAA's Mid-Atlantic region, admitted "If you look at the distribution of the cameras it's clearly tilted toward Black neighborhoods".
