Real News: What part of the DMV are
you from? Who is your clique or crew?
Bangman: I was born on 28th
Avenue in Marlow Heights. Then I moved down to B Street in Southeast. I roll deep but it's not really a "crew". A
lot of people assume we're a clique but the people I'm around are basically a collab of independent artists
that just so happen to be "family".
Real News: How would you describe
your sound/style?
Bangman: That's a good question. I would
describe my sound as brolic and extreme like to the point of ....."OK, this is what I do - know that"!!!
Real News: What do you think about
the local MC's who are blowing up now like Wale and Tabi Bonney?
Bangman: I'm kind
of glad you asked me that. My thing is if you're going to rep my city, the place where I'm from, where I put in work,
then my nigga you got to keep it funky. For example, if me and you are cool but your guys don't know me like that, if I get
in a fight with one of your guys, unless you say he's cool, then you don't get a fair fight in somebody else's hood. So yes,
I'm going to hate you for that. You ain't from here, and I aint never seen you around here. He (Wale) tried to play big with
me. I was like OK, you want to play big with a real nigga, I'm gonna show how real niggas do it. I told him, "You got
a show tonight in Bethesda, when I see you I'm going to punch you in the mouth". He replied, "For all intents and
purposes big guy, you're going about this the wrong way".
As far as Tabi he is just a bitch! I never knew of him until the show up at Coolidge High
School. He performed and some guys were pressing his brother out. This bitch nigga stood next to me and watched his younger
brother get jumped and get his jaw broke. So from that moment forward I chose to eliminate all "Bitchassness"
from the DC rap scene. That's how I came up with the track titled "Them Niggaz Anything (Wale & Tabi Diss)".
Real News: What do you feel about
the local open mic circuit? What are your favorite places to perform?
Bangman: The open mic circuit in DC
is alright, but it could be better. I'll perform anywhere. I don't have a favorite, but if I had to choose - it would
be any open mic that Dre "All Day In The Paint" hosts. He always brings the crowd, and I always bring the noise!!!
Yahhh!
Real News: Who are the most overrated
and underrated DMV artists?
Bangman: Overrated?
Man, I could be here for days. As a journalist you know it as well as I do - a lot of these niggas are in the way.
But other than my two favorite gals, Wale and Tabi, if you don't get in my way I won't notice you. Now as far as underrated
- I"ll say Chaos, Juranamo Jones, Dion Dove and Bangman.
Real News: Talk a little bit about
your fashion. You seem to have the Muslim dress, but then you also incorporate your own customized apparel.
Bangman: Yeah,
I'm a true Muslim so that goes without saying. I also have my own clothing line called "Bangin Gear". The guy that
make my clothes makes anything you see my name on. Car wraps, basketballs, footballs, etc. He can be contacted on Facebook
- his name is Shawn Briggs. Just tell him Bang sent you.
Real News: What does the Bangman have planned
for 2010?
Bangman: The
same thing I have planned for life: To grind like I'm homeless. I just want the spare change - you can keep your dollars!!!
